Strengthening WMINT skills through interactive programs

Year 11 pupils from Nördlingen's Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium visit Aalen University of Applied Sciences

Around 85 11th grade students from Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (THG) Nördlingen, accompanied by some of their teachers, recently visited the Aalen University of Applied Sciences. They were welcomed by Dr. Piyali Bhattacharjee and Stefanie Bango from the school contact office. The focus of the visit was to gain an insight into the WMINT (Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Engineering) Study Programmes offered. Interactive programs from the School Contact Point are designed to provide good orientation for Prospective Students.

After the welcome, the 85 students were divided into four different groups, each accompanied by a university staff member and an accompanying teacher. Each group had the opportunity to go through two different programs that included either interactive presentations, lab visits or a combination of both. The programs offered included a wide range of Study Programmes including natural sciences such as Chemistry and Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering sciences | Future technologies such as Materials for Sustainability or General Mechanical Engineering. There was also a selection of programs in business and management such as International Business and Business Information Systems or Artificial Intelligence.

There was also the opportunity to gain practical experience and carry out experiments with liquid nitrogen, which were led by Stefanie Hölldampf from the explorhino Pupils laboratory. A particular highlight of the economics program was the discussion on internationalization and globalization and their far-reaching effects on the global economy, which Prof. Dr. Patrick Ulrich, a member of the academic staff on the International Business degree program, demonstrated using current examples from the economy. Chemistry professor Prof. Dr. Dirk Flottmann, in turn, used the personal histories of his students to encourage students to focus on the areas of learning that motivate and excite them. He emphasized the importance of networking and recommended visiting institutions of higher education locally to find out about different degree programmes and get a taste of the university atmosphere.

Through such programs, which include technical and natural sciences as well as commercial, profitable, financial, cost-effective departments, the school contact point at Aalen University of Applied Sciences tried to give the young people the opportunity to improve their WMINT skills and prepare them for future Studies and the job market. The students showed great enthusiasm for the various topics and found the varied program offered to them very exciting. "We are delighted with the enormous interest and positive response from the students at Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium and hope that we can continue to accompany them on their educational path in the future," said Piyali Bhattacharjee.
