Thinking Outside the Box General Studies

Currently, all completed activities (lectures, seminars, and workshops) are already recorded and posted in the SAP system. However, the full display of accumulated workload hours and activities in the online portal is still under technical development.

Soon, it will be possible to generate a Transcript of Records (TOR) independently via the SAP online portal. This document will clearly list all recorded achievements from the Studies, including the corresponding workload hours.

We ask for your patience until this feature becomes available. As soon as it is possible to generate the Transcript of Records, we will inform students accordingly.

At Aalen University of Applied Sciences, as part of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, students are generally required to complete Studium Generale modules worth 3 credit points in Bachelor’s programs and 1 credit point in Master’s programs. Exceptions can be found in the “Special Provisions” section of your Studies and Examination Regulations.

Credits for the Studium Generale can be earned throughout the entire course of studies. You must have passed the module before you can register for your thesis.

How can I demonstrate completion of Studies requirements?

• Attendance at lectures
• Participation in seminars and workshops
• Volunteer work in university committees of the University of Applied Sciences
• Assisting with events organized by your degree program and the university’s central administration
• External volunteer work (please observe the regulations)

It’s simple: Track your workload → Write a final report → Submit it to your program

• You accumulate workload during your studies, e.g., by attending lectures and seminars or through volunteer work within the University of Applied Sciences.
• For each activity completed, write a brief summary. Submit your final report at the end of your studies, along with proof of the activities you’ve completed, to your degree program. Your degree program will inform you of the exact submission deadlines.

You generally do not need to register in advance for lectures . Exceptions will be indicated accordingly in the program. However, please check in at the entrance to the event with your student ID before and (if necessary) after the event so that we can record the corresponding course load for you.

You must register in advance for seminars , as only a limited number of seats are available. Starting in the summer semester of 2026, students must register for seminars via our SAP-based online portal. Instructions can be found on our website.

Your registration is binding. If you are unable to attend the seminar for valid reasons, please cancel your registration at least 14 days before the seminar begins so that other students have the opportunity to attend.

Last-minute cancellations for valid reasons (illness, rescheduled lecture, etc.) must be documented by a doctor’s note or a certificate from the academic program.

Unexcused absence from a seminar results in automatic exclusion from all remaining seminars in the current semester. You will also be barred from participating in seminars in the following semester.

If you still wish to participate in the course, please remain on the waiting list. If a participant withdraws, the next students on the waiting list will automatically move up. We will notify all those moving up via email.

However, please remove yourself from the waiting list if you are no longer able to attend, thereby giving your fellow students the chance to take the course.

The event rooms are always published approximately one week before the event begins under the corresponding dates.

For online sessions, the link to the meeting will be sent to you in a timely manner.

An event may be canceled due to the instructor’s illness or insufficient enrollment.

If an event must be canceled, we will make every effort to schedule a make-up session. However, there is no guarantee that a make-up session will be offered. You are only eligible to receive course credit if you actually attend an event.

There is no guarantee that an event will be led by a specific instructor. The Career Center may change the speaker, location, and time of the event for objective reasons. Changes will be announced as soon as possible.

You can register up to ten minutes after the presentation begins. After that, registration closes, and unfortunately, we cannot credit you with any course credit. Registration will not reopen until the event has officially ended. If you leave the event early, you will not receive any course credit.

We want you to be able to experience the events in their entirety. Therefore, in the interest of everyone involved, we ask that you arrive on time and stay until the end.

In exceptional cases, the Career Center may recognize external, ongoing, unpaid, and volunteer work of a social or charitable nature performed in clubs or social institutions.

The following conditions must be met:

• Continuous: Period/duration generally at least one semester
• Volunteer: no compensation
• Responsible: Active in organization and leadership, i.e., you must hold a position such as director, chairperson, or coach
• Only activities undertaken since the start of your studies count. Volunteer activities cannot be credited retroactively.
• The volunteer work must be certified by the club or a nonprofit organization.

For credit to be granted, a certificate must include the following:

• Official letterhead, including a stamp and signature
• Name, student ID number, start date of studies
• Degree program
• Proof of volunteer work performed without compensation
• Activities / Tasks
• Number of hours worked
• Time period

Credit can only be granted after prior review by the Career Center. Please submit your certificate to our P . O. box : Beethovenstraße 1, Career Center P.O. Box No. 215. We require the original document; copies or scans are not accepted. This P.O. box is intended solely for certificates of external volunteer work.

The review may take some time, especially during the semester. You will receive an email as soon as we have reviewed your application.

Important: We will confirm that the volunteer work meets all criteria of the guidelines. To pass the Studies module, you must then write a final report. Submit this report along with all certificates and supporting documents to your degree program.

Please submit the final report to your studies program. The director of the internship office will decide whether you have passed your Studium Generale module.

Your degree program can provide you with information on the exact submission deadlines.
