To make your start at Aalen University of Applied Sciences easier, your faculty will organize an individual onboarding. In addition, the FH-Personal project team have developed an onboarding concept for newly appointed professors. This includes:

  As a newly appointed professor, we want to make your start in your new role as pleasant as possible. That's why we support you right from the start with our mentoring program to help you find your feet quickly and easily.
• Contact person
  At the beginning of your work as a newly appointed professor, you will be assigned a contact person from the FH-Personal project who will support you in all aspects of onboarding.
• Welcome event
  We invite you to a welcome event where you will get to know various departments and receive valuable information for a successful start.
• Guided tours of the research building
  New employees and professors are invited to a guided tour of our research laboratories. You will gain valuable insights and have the opportunity to meet new colleagues

Requirements for a HAW professorship (see also Section 47 of the State Higher Education Act BW):

• A completed degree in accordance with the job description (subject focus of the professorship) with special aptitude for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by a doctorate
• Special achievements in the application of scientific knowledge in at least five years of professional practice (including at least three years outside the university sector)
• Relevant publications in the field
• Willingness and interest in strategically developing a study area, taking on tasks in administrative responsibilities and promoting digitalization and internationalization
• Enjoy sharing your specialist knowledge in interdisciplinary student groups
• Practical pedagogical and didactic aptitude (including the use of new learning media)

Your application documents will enable the appointment committee to gain an initial impression of your suitability for the advertised professorship. Your application should therefore include the following documents:

Frequently asked questions about the appointment procedure

What do I need to consider for a doctorate obtained at a foreign University of Applied Sciences?

Completed doctorates at a foreign university that are equivalent to a doctorate at a German university according to the database of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (ANABIN) are recognized if the doctorate is graded higher than "rite". If the doctorate is not graded, but only "passed", for example, an expert opinion is required. The report must prove that the doctorate is of at least satisfactory quality.

What evidence is required to determine the minimum 5 years of professional experience outside the university sector?

Proof of professional experience in the form of references or employment certificates is required for the assessment of this recruitment requirement. Basic research activities in a company, a university hospital or a non-university research institution cannot be taken into account. Likewise, contract research projects that are publicly funded (e.g. by the DFG or the basic budget of the University of Applied Sciences) are not eligible. It must be checked on a case-by-case basis whether the activity carried out meets the recruitment requirements within the meaning of Section 47(1)(4)(c) LHG.

Will I receive feedback on the status of my application for a professorship?

How long does the appointment procedure take?

The appointment procedure is a multi-stage process that requires a lot of coordination. For this reason, the procedure can take some time.

What is the salary for a professorship?

• Before the contract starts: Please send us the completed documents and required attachments at least 6 working days before the start of the contract, as a PDF file and only from an internal e-mail address (University e-mail address!).
• Employment contract: You will then receive the employment contract by e-mail. Please print out the contract and send us the original signed document (not a PDF) by post or internal mail or in person to room 253. The employment contract must be signed and submitted to the HR department before the start of the contract! Unfortunately, retroactive dating is not possible.
• Working from abroad: Mobile working from abroad is not permitted.
• Working hours: The maximum monthly working hours for marginal employment (as of 01.01.2024 € 538) can be found on the respective personnel forms. Please submit your timesheets to the HR department by the 15th of the following month. If you have not fulfilled the contractually agreed hours, the salary already paid will be reclaimed.
• Time sheets: Please submit your time sheets to the HR department by the 15th of the following month. If more than the contractually agreed working hours are worked in a month, these will be credited to a working time account (time sheets kept) and compensated within the employment contract by granting paid time off. The assistant is responsible for ensuring that the working time account is balanced by the end of employment. The working hours entered in the working time account may not exceed 50 percent of the contractually agreed working hours per month; if the contractually agreed hours have not been fulfilled by you, the salary already paid will be reclaimed.
• Incapacity for work: Inform your supervisor by phone or email. A medical certificate of incapacity for work is required from the fourth calendar day of sick leave. Please forward the certificate to the HR department or inform them that the digital certificate is available. You must also inform your supervisor and the HR department of the expected duration of your sick leave.
• Notice of termination: Notice of termination must be submitted to the HR department at least 4 weeks before the intended end of employment. You can terminate your employment contract on the 15th of the respective month or at the end of the month. The termination form must be submitted to the HR department in paper form with an original signature.
• Termination agreement: The approval of your supervisor is required! The completed form, signed by you and your supervisor, must be submitted to the HR department at least 6 working days before the intended end of employment (15th or end of month). Once the application has been received, you will receive the termination agreement for signature. Please submit this in duplicate, with orginal signatures, no later than one day before it takes effect.
• Pregnancy: Pregnant (students) assistans are subject to the statutory protection periods for maternity protection and are entitled to protection in the workplace and maternity pay. We would therefore like to point out that pregnancy must be reported to the Human Resources Department, together with a doctor's certificate or a copy of the maternity record. The HR department will be happy to answer any further questions you may have!
