KI-Werkstatt Mittelstand presents innovative AI piano exhibit

Aalen University of Applied Sciences combines artificial intelligence and music in an interactive prototype

A new interactive music exhibit combines AI with creative music-making: The AI Workshop for SMEs at Aalen University of Applied Sciences has developed an AI piano prototype in cooperation with Bruno Kramm, which allows visitors to interact and improvise musically with an AI system.

The AI Workshop for SMEs at Aalen University of Applied Sciences is pleased to announce the successful completion of an innovative AI piano prototype. The commissioned project was realized by the musician and music producer Bruno Kramm (Danse Macabre Records & hands on KI) and combines technology and art in a unique way. With this exhibit, the institution of higher education aims to make fields of application for generative artificial intelligence beyond text and image generators visible and demonstrate the creative potential of AI in the field of music.

"While AI-based text and image generators are now widely known, the creative potential of AI in the field of music often goes unnoticed. With our exhibit, we show that artificial intelligence can also open up new dimensions in musical improvisation. It was particularly important to us that the focus is on cooperation, cooperative venture, collaboration with AI and not on the feared replacement of creative professionals by artificial intelligence," explains Lena Müller, project manager, model project (a model project that highlights a particularly important strategic endeavor), model project of the lighthouse project KI-Werkstatt Mittelstand.

Ethical data use and creative interaction

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a MIDI piano mat that allows visitors to interact with the system. An AI model generates creative improvisations in real time. A data set with a Creative Commons license was used for the training. This means that pianists were paid fairly for training this model - an important step towards ethically responsible AI in the creative field (of).

The exhibit offers both amateurs and music professionals an exciting insight into AI systems. Visitors can use the piano mat to enter marks (UK), grade (US) chords and simple tone sequences - without any previous musical knowledge - and experience how the AI improvises based on this. In addition, the way the notes are played or the desired note density can also be specified.

First exhibition at the Open Campus of Aalen University of Applied Sciences

The AI workshop will also be represented with its mobile "AI Experience" and the AI piano at the Open Campus of Aalen University of Applied Sciences on May 24, 2025. In the course of this, we cordially invite not only all interested parties, but also all musicians to bring their instruments and jam together with the AI piano.
