The objective of the Aalen Management Institute is to connect corporate governance and corporate success in a corporate governance system and, based on this, develop a practicable model.

Corporate governance is not only of high relevance for capital-oriented, but also for medium-sized enterprises and family firms. Until now, the success factors of corporate governance, which is based on value-oriented leadership, are largely unclear in theory as well as in practice. The requirements concerning corporate governance are increasing significantly through the increasing regulatory density. Moreover, there is a growing demand for preventive measures to obviate misconduct, balance sheet fraud and economic crime. While existing methods and instruments were rather curative and combated the symptoms, corporate governance should foster prevention and proactively increase corporate success. Next to empirical findings, there is also a lack of concrete recommendations for action regarding corporate governance in practice. With the first study of the study series “Success factors in corporate governance” this area of tension is explored in more depth and thoroughly investigated.

The research focus lies on the following aspects:

  • Framework conditions of corporate governance
  • Strategic perspective
  • Evaluation with respect to critical success factors
  • Recommendations for action

At present time, German medium-sized enterprises increasingly face the challenge to realize the digital transformation of their business models. In particular for medium-sized enterprises that have traditional business models, the implementation of digital strategies leads to far-reaching changes in the world of work. Not only organizational structures, but also the interaction between human and machine will alter. Moreover, working procedures and activities change. The changing organization and structure of work require respective leadership, which is aligned with new organizational conditions. Thus, for medium-sized enterprises questions concerning specifications, framework conditions and opportunities and risks regarding the new world of work arise. Despite existing empirical studies, there is still a lack of best practices, benchmarks and, in particular, reliable scientific figures. The present study addresses these research gaps and aims at deriving recommendations for action.

The research focus lies on the following aspects:

  • Framework conditions of the future world of work
  • Changes in collaboration
  • Changes in organizational structures
  • New room and communication concepts
  • Refugees
  • Change management

The notion of risk describes the potential of a negative deviation from the expected result. Thus, risks might lead to economic damage for enterprises. However, positive deviations might emerge as well. In this context, the following questions arise. How do German enterprises manage risks? How do risk management approaches differ? Which tendencies and challenges are currently of high relevance? The study aims at depicting the risk management practice in Germany to gain insights, which are valuable for practice and science.

The research focus lies on the following aspects:

  • Framework conditions of risk management
  • Risk management systems
  • Types of risks
  • Risk culture
  • Performance assessment of risk management

Through the seamless affiliation of the institute to Aalen University and the integration into the university´s structure and development plan, pertinent publications arising from university life are promoted.

Students are given the possibility to work on subject areas of the institute in bachelor or master theses. Cooperating with company representatives, it is further possible to elaborate practice-relevant topics.

Additionally, the institute offers training courses. In cooperation with Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg, PD Dr. Ulrich offers the possibility to work on a PhD.  Doing a PhD in one of the mentioned subject areas, applied research is promoted and evidence-based benefits are generated.
