Functional models & prototypes of SMA actuators

We distinguish between prototypes in the intended target size and functional models at an enlarged scale. Prototypes of miniaturized shape memory actuators are often very small - too small to measure relevant intermediate variables (e.g. wire forces) or to incorporate adjustment options. Functional prototypes realized at a larger scale are much better suited to verify the functionality of new actuator concepts - especially since forces and motions can be easily scaled.

The following sections show examples of some prototypes and functional models that have recently been developed in our laboratory. Further actuator developments are currently underway.
