Light interacts with matter. It can even control it, and likewise, matter can change the properties of light!  The most fascinating form of light is laser radiation. This group studies the generation of ultrashort laser pulses, their manipulation, the linear and nonlinear response when they hit a target and their applications in laser materials processing.

Dynamics in the Attosecond Range:

Direct observation of ultrafast electron motion in atomic or molecular systems is an aspect of fundamental physics and is enabled by the generation of attosecond pulses in the XUV spectral region. A major advantage of attosecond pulse trains over isolated attosecond pulses is their high spectral resolution while maintaining high temporal resolution. The goal is to study photoionization in atoms and molecules with attosecond pulse trains. Of particular interest are the continuum-continuum transitions near the ionization threshold.
