The ZOT (Center for Optical Technologies) is the research center of the Bachelor's degree program Optical Engineering and the Master's degree program Applied Photonics. It sees itself as the optical competence center of Aalen University.

- Light-Matter Interaction & Lasers (Prof. Dr. Anne Harth)
- Micro- and Nanophotonics (Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinrich)
- Biophotonics (Prof. Dr. Andreas Walter)
- Opto-Electronics (Prof. Dr. Peter Zipfl)
The ZOT carries out basic and application-oriented research projects in the above-mentioned areas with industry or other university partners. The ZOT is financed by public funding bodies (e.g. DFG, BMBF, BW Stiftung, etc.) as well as by direct industrial cooperation.
