On October 19 and 20, Aalen Friends of Optometry and Prof. Dr. Tony Cavallerano from the New England College of Optometry, Boston, USA, will be hosting a training course on retina and eye emergencies. Exciting lectures for alumni and students: 12th Alumni-Event of the Master Program „Vision Science and Business (Optometry)“

During the 12th yearly Alumni-Event of the internationally well-known Master program “M.Sc. Vision Science and Business (Optometry)” on the 20th and 21st July 2019 an exceptional program was shown. About 80 Alumni and current students participated at interactive presentations and listened to exciting lectures from speakers from Europe and the USA.

Two times different optometric cases were presented by Dr. Bina Patel of the New England College of Optometry, Boston, MA. The listeners could actively discuss about diagnosis and management of the cases. There were also two lecturers from the second partner university of the “M.Sc. Vision Science and Business (Optometry)”. Dr. Ryan Bulson and Dr. Karl Citek (Pacific University, Forest Grove, OR) they talked about Glaucoma prevention and the effects of blue light on the eye. Furthermore, interesting master thesis presentations and more presentations about research, optometry and contact lenses completed the diverse program. A fantastic Guest of honor was Prof. Dr. Bleything (Pacific University, Forest Grove, OR). As always the meeting of the “Aalen Friends of Optometry e.V” Club was held and the following party gave the participants the possibility for further discussions.

Save the date: The 13th Alumni-Event takes place in Benediktbeuern on July 4 and 5, 2020. You can look forward to a various and interesting presentations by international recognized lecturers.

Georg Scheuerer, chairman of the alumni association "Aalen Friends of Optometry", Isabel Korth and their colleagues on the board of directors and Prof. Dr. h.c. Dietmar Kümmel have put together again an ingenious program for optometrists on the weekend of 20 and 21 July 2019 in Benediktbeuern. In addition to Prof. Bina Patel, OD, of the New England College of Optometry, Boston, USA, and more renowned US lecturers and ophthalmologists/optometrists and alumni of the Aalen part-time Master's program will share the current state of research and their practical experience with the participants of this excellent further training program for optometrists.

Digitization meets optometry - International experts lectured at Aalen University

Im Anschluss an das Beiratsmeeting im Masterstudienangebot Vision Science and Business (Optometry) referierten am Freitag, den 15. März, renommierte internationale Experten der Optometrie, darunter Alumni der Hochschule Aalen. Bei der Vortragsveranstaltung gewährten vier Experten Einblicke in ihren Berufsalltag. Die Themen reichten von der Glaukom-Forschung über die Kontaktlinsen- und Sportbrillenoptometrie bis hin zur Digitalisierung und dem Europäischen Diplom. Prof. Dr. Anna Nagl, Studiendekanin des Masterstudienangebots an der Hochschule Aalen, hieß die Beiratsmitglieder und die zahlreich erschienen Bachelor- und Masterstudierenden im neuen Aula- und Hörsaalgebäude der Hochschule herzlich willkommen.

AALEN Der Nachmittag am Freitag, den 15. März, stand an der Hochschule Aalen ganz im Zeichen der Optometrie. Mit vier Vorträgen rund um die frühzeitige Erkennung des Grünen Stars und Fallbeispielen aus der Kontaktlinsen- und Sportoptometrie sowie der Digitalisierung war für die Zuhörer ein spannendes Programm geboten. Prof. Antonio Cavallerano von der US-amerikanischen Partneruniversität der Hochschule Aalen, dem New England College of Optometry, Boston, eröffnete die Veranstaltung mit einem Vortrag zu „Glaucoma Research and Patient Care“. Prof. Cavallerano ging dabei auf neueste Erkenntnisse in der Erforschung der Erkrankung „Grüner Star“ ein und erläuterte, wie neue Technologien, wie z. B. Virtual Reality, bei der Diagnostik eingesetzt werden können.

Spannende Fallbeispiele aus der Praxis
Mike Wyss, ebenfalls Alumni des Masterstudiengangs und Vorstand bei der Optometriepraxis eyeness AG in Bern, zeigte anhand von Beispielen seiner Kunden, wie wichtig eine hohe optometrische Kompetenz für die optimale Versorgung der Bevölkerung bei Sehproblemen ist. Markus Hofmann, Gründer und Vorstand des Sehzentrums Zürich AG und ebenfalls Alumni des Masterstudiengangs, gab im darauffolgenden Vortrag Einblicke in den spannenden Bereich der Sportoptometrie und zeigte anhand konkreter Beispiele, welche Erfolge mit einem Visualtraining für (Profi-)Sportler nach einer sport-indizierten Gehirnerschütterung erzielt werden können.

Digitalisierung bietet neue Möglichkeiten
Dass die Digitalisierung auch in der Optometrie ein wichtiges Thema ist, darauf ging der für diesen Tag aus Norwegen angereiste Referent Hans Torvald Haugo, Generalsekretär des norwegischen Augenoptik-Verbands, ein. Er berichtete auf anschauliche Weise von neuen Entwicklungen im Bereich E-Health und Optometrie. In seinem Vortrag zeigte er auch, wie u.a. durch Weblösungen und Smartphone-Anwendungen bereits heute Kunden – ohne zum Augenoptiker gehen zu müssen – eigenständig Refraktionen durchführen können. Abschließend stellte er noch kurz das sog. ECOO-Diplom, das Europäische Diplom in Optometrie, vor. Ziel des ECOO-Diploms ist es, die Berufs- und Ausbildungssysteme für Optometrie und Optik europaweit zu harmonisieren. Der berufsbegleitende Aalener Masterstudiengang M.Sc. Vision Science and Business (Optometry) plant Teil dieser europaweiten Initiative zu werden.

An diesem Nachmittag gelang es allen Referenten, aktuelle Erkenntnisse aus der Forschung und der täglichen Praxis für die Zuhörer spannend und verständlich vorzustellen. Die Studierenden konnten durch die Vorträge einen praxisnahen Einblick in ihr zukünftiges Berufsfeld erhalten. Prof. Nagl animierte die Studierenden, neugierig zu sein und lud sie ein, Kontakte mit den anwesenden Experten u. a. auch für ihr Praxissemester zu knüpfen. Der Vorsitzende des Alumni Vereins „Aalen Friends of Optometry e.V.“, und Inhaber eines augenoptischen Betriebs, Georg Scheuerer, findet, „dass es an diesem Nachmittag gelungen ist, die Studenten für den spannenden Beruf des Augenoptikers/Optometristen und für das ständige Weiterbilden auch nach dem (ersten) Studienabschluss zu begeistern.“

Alumni event 2018 of the M.Sc. Vision Science & Business (Optometry)

On 9 and 10 June 2018, the annual alumni event of the M.Sc. Vision Science & Business (Optometry) in Aalen took place for the eleventh time. Once again internationally renowned speakers were invited to Benediktbeuern, who presented exciting lectures from various areas of ophthalmic optics and optometry to the approximately 70 attendees. 

This year's key note was given by the US specialist for retinal diseases Prof. Tony Cavallerano, OD, FAAO, from the New England College of Optometry, Boston, MA. In addition, there were a large number of top-class presentations from the fields of contact lenses, low vision and sports vision. In addition, two interactive workshops on the topics "Fundusbeurteilung" and "Vision Therapy" were offered. Furthermore, this year's master colloquia and the meeting of the alumni association "Aalen Friends of Optometry e.V." took place.

The date for next year's meeting has already been set: On 20 and 21 July 2019, the director of the international programme of the New England College of Optometry and lecturer in the part-time Master's programme at Aalen University, Prof. Bina Patel, OD, FAAO and many other top-class speakers will be giving exciting lectures.
