International students Rita from Italy and Ahmad from Pakistan fondly recall their first days in Aalen: from the colorful city festival to the warm welcome by the International Center. The orientation weeks at Aalen University of Applied Sciences not only provided practical support but also countless opportunities to make new friends and discover the region. Today, both are committed to helping other international students, sharing their experiences and insights.
When Rita Bergami thinks back to her arrival in Aalen, one image immediately comes to mind: a vibrant town center, festively decorated for the Reichsstädter Tage festival, and the unmistakable feeling of being truly welcome. “It was like a fairy tale,” recalls the Erasmus student from Italy. Ahmad Raza from Pakistan describes his first hours in much the same way—just minutes after arriving, his German buddy picked him up at the train station and added a city tour and a welcome dessert right after. “I felt at home right away,” he says.
Both agree that the orientation weeks for international students were crucial for their successful start. Whether it was a game night, a city tour, an intercultural breakfast at the town hall, or a creative city rally, the activities not only helped them get to know Aalen but also enabled them to make friends quickly. “You don’t feel like just a number here, but like part of a community,” says Rita.
Ahmad especially values the practical support he received—from creating his class schedule and navigating campus life to dealing with official procedures. Particularly memorable for him were the “Walk & Talk” Sunday walks, organized by Rosemarie Francis-Binder from the International Center. “It was a wonderful opportunity to explore nearby villages, meet German families, and enjoy activities together,” he adds. These walks take place on weekends, giving international students opportunities to connect and engage even outside class hours.
Another initiative to help students integrate into the region is the Family Program, which allows international students to experience everyday life with a local family. Interested residents can sign up as host families at: familienprogramm@hs-aalen.de
Both students were struck by the warm atmosphere and dedication of the International Center. “It didn’t matter what problem you had—there was always someone ready to help immediately,” says Rita. Ahmad adds, “The support was so good that I decided to extend my stay and am now pursuing my Master’s degree here.”
Rita is now a student assistant at the Service Center for International Researchers Embrace, working in the area of diversity and intercultural exchange. Ahmad works at the International Office, where he helps new international students settle in smoothly.
Their advice to all newcomers: “Take part in as many events as possible, be open, and enjoy every minute—the time passes faster than you think.”
