Anyone strolling across the campus of Aalen University will hear snippets of conversation in various languages—such as Georgian, English, Arabic, or Nepali. After all, many students come from all over the world. They bring the international campus to life and contribute to a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The university maintains strong relationships with more than 130 partner universities worldwide. In a series of articles, we highlight inspiring stories of students from our partner universities who have chosen to continue their academic journey at Aalen University. This edition features Thaís Guedes from Brazil.

42 Dream Beaches

Turquoise lagoons, 42 pristine beaches, the vast Atlantic rainforest, breathtaking canyons, and the bustling city of Florianópolis—Thaís Guedes’ homeland is a place of extraordinary natural beauty. Florianópolis, or "Floripa," as it is affectionately known by locals, serves as the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina and is situated on the island of the same name.

Born and raised in this remarkable city, the 21-year-old has also chosen to pursue her academic journey there. For the past five semesters, she has been studying Business Administration at Santa Catarina State University, one of Brazil’s most prestigious universities.

A Passion for Germany

For a year, Thaís Guedes has exchanged the dynamic metropolis of southern Brazil for the Ostalb region to further her studies at Aalen University. “I was determined to come to Germany. My parents have always had a deep appreciation for the country—my father himself was once an exchange student here. Together, we have traveled to Germany at least twelve times. The Alps are simply breathtaking, offering an extraordinary panorama,” the young woman enthuses. She then adds with a smile: “In a way, my parents have passed their passion for Germany on to me.”

When selecting a destination for her semester abroad, she had three options: Berlin, Aachen, and Aalen. However, as she preferred a smaller city with a more central location in Germany, the decision was quickly made. “Aalen is a charming town. I particularly enjoy the cafés in the city center and the beautiful city park.” She also greatly values the safety and tranquility. “Being out alone at night in my hometown? That would be unthinkable—far too dangerous! Even though Florianópolis is considered one of the safest cities in Brazil, my friends and I never walk when going out in the evening. We always take an Uber,” Guedes explains.

Spain Is Next on the Agenda

Thaís Guedes also greatly appreciates Aalen’s strategic location. “From here, numerous German and European cities can be conveniently reached by train,” she remarks with enthusiasm. Traveling is one of her greatest passions, and on weekends, she is always on the move with a small group of fellow exchange students.

Since her arrival in September of last year, she has already visited Poland, Serbia, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland. “There is still so much more I wish to explore. Spain is next on the agenda,” she says with a smile.

Quickly Feeling at Home

Living in Aalen has been an exceptional experience for Thaís Guedes. “It has truly exceeded my expectations. Everyone here is incredibly welcoming and open-minded. I quickly established connections, particularly with other international students,” she says with great enthusiasm.

She expresses deep gratitude for the support provided by Aalen University’s International Center, particularly with visa applications and the search for accommodation. Initially, she had planned to stay for just one semester. “However, I have now extended my stay to a full year. The experience is incredibly enriching—one learns more than in all the years of schooling. It fosters independence and challenges me to find solutions in difficult situations, even without parental guidance,” she reflects. Then, with a subtle smile, she adds: “Although, I must admit, I do sometimes call my mother for advice—such as how to properly wash delicate clothing.”

At Least 42 Reasons for a Semester Abroad

Thaís Guedes is also highly satisfied with her academic experience at Aalen University. “The business administration lectures are both engaging and insightful. It is evident that the professors have prior experience in the private sector, which provides them with a practical perspective on what awaits us after graduation. Their professional background and real-world expertise make theoretical concepts far more tangible and comprehensible,” she explains.

Currently, she is contemplating pursuing her master’s degree in a European country. The only aspects she occasionally misses—apart from her family, friends, and Brazilian cuisine—are the ability to go directly from a lecture to the beach and take a refreshing swim in the ocean. “So, students in Aalen have at least 42 compelling reasons to consider spending a semester abroad at my university!” she remarks with a bright smile.
