Optical technologies contribute significantly to employment and add value to the present as well as to the future. They also play a major role in research, education and training. In order to stay up to date in the fields of optics and photonics and to exchange information with industry representatives about upcoming developments, our work group leaders of the Center for Optical Technologies (ZOT) are currently in San Francisco at the "Photonics West 2023".

This is one of the most important annual events showcasing the best in photonics research and technology. International leaders from academia, industry and government come together to share and learn. Among the topics discussed are research in biomedical optics, biophotonics, industrial lasers, optoelectronics, microfabrication, MOEMS-MEMS, displays, and quantum technologies - including Quantum 2.0.

The city of Aalen recently decided to subsidize two endowed professorships in the field of photonics at Aalen University of Applied Sciences. Over five years, the city will support them with a total of around 533,000 euros. The Ostalbkreis district and the city of Oberkochen as well as two well-known companies in the region are also involved. One endowed professorship will be dedicated to "Applied Quantum Information Processing", the other to "Laser Materials Processing". These professorships will particularly benefit the Optical Engineering and Applied Photonics degree programs. This sets Aalen University on promising ground. Photonics is a key technology that has mastered the balancing act between tradition and transformation.
