The Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein has appointed Prof. Dr. Ulrich Holzbaur as an honorary professor. Thereby senate and management of the university acknowledge the long-standing commitment of the Aalener at the partner university in South Africa.

Already in 2010, Ulrich Holzbaur, professor of industrial engineering at Aalen University was appointed as visiting professor, and in 2014 as an extraordinary professor of the South African university. The current nomination represents a further distinction of recognition of the Aalen professor’s engagement with the partner university Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein.

The letter of appointment mentions in particular Holzbaur’s current activities linked to the development and implementation of experimental planning for entrepreneurship in emerging countries, as well as the implementation of education for sustainable development at CUT, and diverse co-operations in research projects. Holzbaur is a member of the cross-faculty research group “Sustainable Development” and has worked together with colleagues since 2002 in the areas of research management and additive production processes. Since 2005, he has co-operated with the department of Management on themes of project management, game-plan development, and event management.

Through the variety of contacts it is possible for students to hear not only lectures, but also to provide them with proof of performance in research-related projects. This is particularly interesting for master students.

Prof. Dr. Alexnader Haubrock, vice-president of international affairs at Aalen University, elaborated: this honor recognizes the longtime work and merits of Professor Holzbaur in the development of contact from Aalen University to CUT in a very specific way. Contacts of this type are immensely valuable and fruitful for the internationalization of Aalen University.

In the meantime, Vaal University (VUT) has officially become a partner institution of Aalen University. In addition, Aalen University has contacts with five other universities in South Africa and Namibia. South Africa allows the recognition of two semesters abroad in the Bachelor Plus programme to students of business administration. The study course industrial engineering at Aalen University maintains a wide range of international contacts – in addition to South Africa, active international partnerships exist with Jordan, Hungary, Sweden, Brazil, and a dozen other countries.
