The Research Center for Complex Systems (RCS) working with Big Data in Manufacturing GmbH to study AI-based measuring solutions, has received a grant for nearly 200,00 EUR from the Zentrale Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand ZIM. The Consortium was awarded a total of nearly 600,000 EUR in funding. Prof. Dieter William Joenssen, Professor in Industrial Data Science and Head of School of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Aalen University, will direct the two year multidisciplinary research programme. The joint research will involve Prof. Peter Eichinger from the School of Optics and Mechatronics as a further academic partner. "As a team we are taking a multidisciplinary approach meaning that we are going to combine people from different disciplines with a wide range of talents and expertise to essentially work on a common problem," said Prof. Joenssen, leader of the Industrial Data Science group within RCS. The goals of the research are to develop automated measuring methods equipped with a self-learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will be able to detect workpiece anomalies in the machining of their digital twins and use the information to ultimately improve the measuring of workpieces. The research programme involves two specific projects designed to study AI-based measuring solutions. Prof. Joenssen will investigate the AI development and examine decision-making for reliable virtual measurements.
