Where normally hundreds of new students would be informed about the first steps of their studies, is now a gaping void. Because of that, Aalen University’s YouTube channel keeps getting „fuller”. Instead of on campus, the approx. 650 new students were greeted by University President Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider via livestream. “This semester will be an adventure for all of us”, he explains, “but together, we can do this”.

It was truly a premiere: for the first time, Aalen University’s semester opening took place completely digitally.

A small taste of summer semester 2020 for the students, as lectures will also take place online due to the Corona-Pandemic. For this reason, Aalen University worked intensely the past weeks to prepare and create an appropriate didactic concept, says Schneider. Aalen University received the seal of approval “study digitally – we are ready (Covid-19)” from Germany’s largest portal for university appraisal.

The University’s Functions introduce themselves via Video

As representative of the city of Aalen, Felix Unseld, director of business development and digitalization, welcomed the new students also to the Ostalb and wished them luck regarding their decision to study in the region.

Even if the new students have not been able to get to know the campus yet, various functions of Aalen University, like the International Relations Office, the Central Student Advisory Service, the founding initiative start-UP!de, or the student groups, introduced themselves via video.

In this way, the students got a first impression from the diverse opportunities at Aalen University and know who to contact, in case they need support.

The students then used the chance to chat with their new classmates online during the welcome event for new students. That way, students were able to make plans from home for the time when presence is possible at Aalen University once again.
