"Do I have to have a guilty conscience if I don't act sustainably?"

Sustainability in everyday life is often easier said than done. Many people experience an inner conflict between their own demands and their actual behavior. An interactive panel discussion at Aalen University of Applied Sciences on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 3:45 pm will address how to deal with this and whether a guilty conscience can even make sense.

Experts from science and business will discuss responsibility, social expectations and individual scope for action in the field of sustainability at Aalen University of Applied Sciences using concrete examples from everyday life - such as consumption, mobility, travel or nutrition. "A guilty conscience arises when our behavior is not in line with our own standards. The decisive factor is how we deal with it - because this feeling can also be an impulse for reflective action," explains Prof. Dr. Katharina Weber, Sustainability Officer at Aalen University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Dr. Christian Arndt from Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences adds: "Sustainable behavior is not only a moral issue, but also a rational calculation." They will be joined in the discussion by Prof. Dr. Regina Kempen (Ethics Officer at Aalen University of Applied Sciences), whose research focuses on social responsibility and sustainable behavior, among other things.

The panel discussion is aimed at interested members of the public and members of the university. The audience is expressly invited to contribute their own questions and perspectives. The discussion will take place on Tuesday, May 12 from 3:45 pm in the WIN building of Aalen University of Applied Sciences (room 1.07). Admission is free, registration is not necessary.
