Admission requirements

To study a master's degree program at Aalen University, you need a first professionally qualifying university degree or an equivalent qualification.

What makes this degree programme special

Strong Fraternities and workplace training; academic knowledge and practical experience; theory and practice

Solid physical and optical fundamentals are combined with practical lab work, project work and application-oriented topics such as laser development, optical systems, imaging and medical technology.

Flexible course models: full-time and part-time

You can study in the traditional three semesters (lectures, laboratories / labs, project, Master's Thesis) or in a part-time model with parallel employment or staff in industrial projects or research centers.

Close links to research centers and industry partners

Collaboration, cooperation with the Center for Optical Technologies, the Laser Application Center and industrial companies enable project-related research, practice-integrated learning and early contact with employers.

Internationally oriented vocational training

The degree programme is aimed at national and international students, promotes junior researchers in the field of research in photonics and gives you access to global research and technology networks.

Application and admission for international prospective students

You can find all information and requirements for international students who would like to apply for admission on the application page.

Career insights of our graduates

Career opportunities

Philipp Biller

Systems engineer for space technology at Tesat-Spacecom

I was particularly fascinated by laser technology. Today I develop possibilities for communication with lasers in space.

Daniel Schmied

Senior Engineer Roughness Metrology Processes at ZEISS SMT GmbH

My area of responsibility is diverse, from measurement processes to planning and implementation with regard to process stability and quality, to analyzing and eliminating measurement problems in production.

Career prospects

As a graduate of the Photonics masters/master's programme, you are particularly well qualified for a leading position in Research and Development, where sound theoretical knowledge in physics and optics is combined with practical experience. Possible fields of activity are, for example:

  • Development and application of lasers and laser systems
  • Design and development of optical instruments
  • New technologies for lighting and displays
  • Development and application of medical systems for diagnosis and therapy
  • Design and production of micro- and nano-optics
  • Biomedical optical microscopy
  • Interaction of laser and light radiation with materials
