Science fiction began with the Scientific Revolution, with the paradigm shift from the old cosmos into the new. As this new cosmos was decentralised, inhuman, and alien, science fiction evolved as a way to make human sense of the cultural shock created by the discovery of our new place in a fundamentally inhospitable cosmos.

Dozent: Mark Brake, has worked as a science communicator and consultant for films, television, print, and radio on five continents. His clients have included NASA, Seattle’s Science Fiction Museum, the BBC & the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Mark is best known for his work in popularising the relationship between space, science and culture. He was Professor of Science Communication at the University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales), until he retired to focus on writing. His books have been published by Cambridge University Press, Lonely Planet, and SkyHorse amongst others. He has also written for journals including Nature and Science Fiction Studies. His books have been translated into over a dozen languages, including Chinese, German, Japanese, Polish, Russian, & Turkish
