The focus of our alumni activities is on exchange. We want to create networks and sororities between alumni, students, Professors / Professors and staff of the academic staff of the Engineering Management degree program. Through communication and collaboration, cooperation, we want to build, maintain and continue forward-looking and long-lasting partnerships. Every single member can benefit from these partnerships:
the alumni, who find qualified staff among the students or alumni and refresh or establish contacts with other alumni.
Students, who can get a taste of practice; practical experience and different career opportunities during their studies and get to know potential employers.
and last but not least, the Professors / lecturers / members of the academic staff of the degree programme W, who can exchange ideas with practitioners and establish new contacts or revive old ones.
Through these activities, we strengthen and motivate our students in their elected discipline right from the start. In line with the faculty's motto "Fit for a Changing World" , they are thus enriched with valuable contacts for the future.
We would be delighted if you would contact us and become part of our alumni network.
In your studies and professional life as an industrial engineer, it is important for you to maintain contacts and take on social responsibility. Through the contacts made via our alumni platform, relationships are established in the various sectors of the economy, business and thus ensuring the integration of the institution of higher education into society.
In our experience, it makes sense to make contacts in the professional world as early as possible. That's why our new LinkedIn group "WIW Aalen Alumni und Aktive" offers a platform for our students and alumni to get to know each other and exchange ideas. The group is moderated by Professor Dr. Ulrich Holzbaur and Monika Bühr.
Studies at Aalen University of Applied Sciences are suitable for anyone with an interest in application-oriented education. The combination of academic study and workplace training; academic knowledge and practical experience; theory and practice was well balanced.
Activities and professional experience
W: You have been working at Robert Bosch GmbH since 2011. How can we imagine your day-to-day work?
Maren Bürger: Together with a small team, I coordinate the long-term sales and turnover planning for products. I use this data to create various analyses, which are used throughout the field (of), for example, to create strategies. My area of responsibility is at the exciting interface between Sales and Product Management.
W: What are the special fields of your work?
Maren Bürger: The special field of my work is to tax this planning, check its plausibility and use this data to create analyses for management. During my Studies, I learned to quickly train myself in a structured way in unfamiliar topics and tasks. I benefit from this today.
W: What challenges did you face when you started your career?
Maren Bürger: One of the biggest challenges was making decisions and being responsible for them. I wasn't familiar with this from various activities as a working student and intern. At the same time, I optimized my time management and learned to prioritize correctly.
W: What has influenced your career path?
Maren Bürger: For the most part, conversations with friends and colleagues have influenced my career path.
Tips for students
W: What advice would you give our students and graduates who are interested in a particular career path?
Maren Bürger: It always makes sense to ask yourself the following questions:
Where do I want to go?
What interests me?
What are my strengths?
The answers can be used to adapt the curriculum, course content. Experience gained through internships, work placements, practicums and student traineeships is helpful here. You are given a "rough plan" for your future career, but this can always be flexible. My preferences, which I gained through various working student activities, influenced my decision to specialize in Business Administration, BA.
W: What tips do you have for our students on finding contacts, e.g. for applications?
Maren Bürger: The key for me was the working student activities and internships, work placements, practicums. I was able to make valuable contacts during my Studies and gain initial experience in large companies. Global companies often prefer applicants who have already worked for the company.
W: What advice would you give today's students to be successful in their appointment funding for professors; appointment funds?
Maren Bürger: Take advantage of the general studies part of the degree program, especially in the fields of soft skills (moderation & Public Speaking, conflict resolution and self-marketing). These skills are needed in every industry.
W: Should a Bachelor's graduate aim for a Master's degree?
Maren Bürger: Unfortunately, there is no general answer here, as it always depends on your own goals. At the time, I had to choose between a Master's degree and a tenured position and, after a lot of thought, I decided to go for the practical experience.
Studies
W: What made you decide to study Engineering Management in Aalen?
Maren Bürger: For home reasons, I preferred to study in the region and decided on Aalen University of Applied Sciences.
W: What reasons did you have for going to an institution of higher education instead of a university?
Maren Bürger: I already felt comfortable in class at school. I didn't want to miss working in smaller groups during my Studies either. That was the reason for me to go to an institution of higher education. Studies at the institution of higher education are also practice-orientated, with vocational-technical orientation.
W: From today's perspective, what significance did your duration/length of program (US)/program/course (UK) have for you?
Maren Bürger: I learned how to tackle unknown tasks and problems and how to develop solutions accordingly. But even "simple" things, such as the Excel courses, are very beneficial today. The degree is the ticket to a successful professional life, which can open up many opportunities.
W: Were you able to gain work experience before or during your Studies and what advantages did this give you?
Maren Bürger: I gained a lot of insight into working life through various internships, work placements, practicums. I also had a contract as a working student in industry during my Studies, which is very interesting financially and promotes additional professional experience.
W: Where did you do your practical semester in a school, practical semester?
Maren Bürger: I completed my practical semester in a school, practical semester at Behr in the USA. A practical semester in a school, practical semester abroad is recommended, as ultimately a Foreign Language, such as English, can only be learned properly abroad, which is very important for later professional life. You also develop personally away from your family and friends. Personal development is just as important as appointment funding for professors; appointment funds.

"Man has three ways to act wisely:
by thinking - that is the noblest!
by imitation - that is the easiest!
by gathering experience - that is the bitterest."
Activities and professional experience
W: You have been working in the family business Gaugler & Lutz oHG since 2009. How can we imagine your day-to-day work there?
Dominic Lutz: In my day-to-day work, there is none so-called day-to-day business, with the exception of answering the daily e-mail, emails. I always take on different roles in the company. However, my main task is project business in a wide variety of fields (of).
W: What challenges did you face when you started your career?
Dominic Lutz: The challenge is to integrate well into the company or field of work. You have to be able to take on responsibility and be loyal to your superiors and colleagues.
W: What has influenced your career path?
Dominic Lutz: For me, it has always been and still is important to be able to survive on my own. This influenced my decision to join the family business at a very early stage. Through my previous professional activities, I was able to learn many skills and abilities and bring them into my current job as an authorized signatory.
Tips for students
W: What advice would you give our students and graduates who are interested in a particular career path?
Dominic Lutz: You always have to ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? In which field (of) do I want to work? Do I want to specialize in one subject area or gain a broad perspective on projects and company processes?
If you are aware of what you want to achieve in life and in your appointment funding for professors; appointment funds, you will find your individual career path.
W: What tips do you have for our students on finding contacts, e.g. for applications?
Dominic Lutz: The study fair (AIM) at Aalen University of Applied Sciences as well as study fairs at other colleges or universities are useful here. Metropolitan areas such as Stuttgart or Munich often show an up-to-date picture of the professions we are looking for. There is also the opportunity to obtain information from the Association of German Engineers.
W: What advice would you give today's students to be successful in their careers?
Dominic Lutz: The most important thing is to be authentic. It is impossible to slip into another role in the long term. Everyone has to take responsibility for themselves. You can influence your own actions, but not those of others.
W: Should a Bachelor's graduate aim for a Master's degree?
Dominic Lutz: The Bachelor's degree lacks the second practical semester in a school, practical semester. For this reason, the Masters (UK)/master's (US) Studies should be pursued, of course only if all prerequisite(s) have been met. Ultimately, the "fun" of the work is important. This motivates you and grades are no longer the main focus. However, without a degree accordingly, you will quickly fall through the cracks at large corporations.
W: How did you continue your education after completing your Studies?
Dominic Lutz: It is very important to continue your education in a goal-oriented way. When deciding on the appropriate Further Education, be aware of your own benefits and rely on a recognized training partner. It is not enough to simply collect certificates to ensure a successful future career.
Studies
W: What made you decide to study Engineering Management in Aalen?
Dominic Lutz: There were several important reasons for me to study at Aalen University of Applied Sciences. Firstly, the proximity was important to me and secondly, the desire for financial independence. Studies outside of Aalen would not have been possible without the support of my parents or possible funding from the federal government, such as German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) (national student grant). The third reason was that at the beginning of my studies, the Engineering Management degree program was only offered at very few institutions of higher education. As a result, there were very few graduates at the time, which gave me a certain exclusivity. And as a final reason, the practical orientation of an institution of higher education, formerly a University of Applied Sciences, was important to me.
W: What significance did the duration of your studies; time to degree have for you from today's perspective?
Dominic Lutz: Of course, I associate my Studies with fond memories and also the time and opportunity to shape my life more freely compared to my later professional life. With semesters off or semester breaks, you have many opportunities to get to know different things and explore numerous interesting subject areas.
W: How did your Studies prepare you for your appointment funding for professors; appointment funds?
Dominic Lutz: The degree program gave me an understanding of the different industries. Studies liaise with a basic qualification, basically teaching specialist knowledge and skills. This basic qualification enabled me to train independently in many different fields of work in the individual industries.
W: What was particularly helpful for you during your Studies?
Dominic Lutz: The varied internships, work placements, practicums and my Diplom thesis in a company were particularly helpful for me. Each internship, work placement, practicum and Diplom thesis gave me an early insight into the professional world. I was able to take on smaller tasks and gain professional experience, which can contribute enormously to a successful career.
