Intelligent condition monitoring for screw compressors

Research project successfully completed

An innovative system for sensor-based condition monitoring of industrial screw compressors was developed at the Department, Institute of Drive Technology at Aalen University of Applied Sciences in cooperation, cooperative venture, partnership, collaboration with Renner GmbH Kompressoren. The aim of the EfficientKompressor research project was to combine physical modelling with data-based analysis and machine learning procedures in order to reliably detect typical fault conditions - such as insufficient belt tension, changes in oil quantities or air filter blockages - at an early stage.

The project was funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg as part of the Invest BW - Innovation II funding program. It ran from January 2023 to June 2025 under the funding codes BW1_3120/01 (Renner GmbH Kompressoren) and BW1_3120/02 (Aalen University of Applied Sciences). In addition to the integration of internal and external sensors, the scheme, enterprise, aim, goal included extensive test series on a realistic test bench and the development of classification models with high accuracy. The results obtained have already been published in several scientific papers and form a sound basis for industrial series validation.

Many thanks to the Ministry of Economy, Business and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg for the funding within the framework of Invest BW, to the lead partner, lead entity VDI/VDE-IT for the technical and organizational support and to our industrial partner Renner GmbH Kompressoren for the dedicated cooperation, financial, cost-effective, partnership, collaboration.
