Aalen University received guests from far away at the Environmental and Cultural Center at Benediktbeuern Monastery. They came from places including Italy, Slovenia, Russia and Thailand for the Alumni get together and the Optometry convention for the occupational master course “Vision Science and Business (Optometry)”. Prof Dr. h.c. Dietmar Kümmel and Prof. Dr. Anna Nagl were responsible for the invitations to this event.

The Alumni meeting and Optometry convention for the Aalen University’s occupational master course „Vision Science and Business (Optometry)“ is almost a classic: the baroque walls of the former Benedictine monastery have housed students and alumni of the course for the tenth time and offered, aside from swapping professional experience, the opportunity to enjoy the evenings together.

The auditorium hosted an exciting and diverse program of lectures on selected themes within the field, presentations of master theses, and the students’ project work. This is when, for example, Prof. Dr. Hannu Laukkanen of Pacific University in Oregon (USA) spoke about skull-brain trauma and the brain injuries associated with it. He showed how it’s possible to diagnose old brain injuries. Further presentations came from Prof. Dr. Thomas Freddo (New England College of Optometry, Massachusetts, USA), Prof. Dr. Matjaz Mihelcic (University Velika Gorica, Croatia) and recent graduate Silke Lohrengel. Prof. Dr. Willard Bleything came from Pacific University, Oregon, USA and was hailed as the guest of honor.

In the following year, the Optometry convention and alumni meeting for the master course “Vision Science and Business (Optometry)” will take place again. The plans for June 8-12, 2018 are already in the works. The event puts importance on the spirit of internationalism held by Aalen University’s occupational Optometry master course. It should give students and alumni the opportunity to swap information and continue to develop themselves with internationally renowned Optometry specialists.
